The outdoors is a wonderful classroom. Let SRO help you integrate these unique educational opportunities into your program.
Our school adventure programs are designed to fit into the science curriculum for all grades and many follow the Learning Standards and Frameworks set forth by the individual states. Our programs can be run to suite any grade level through high school. Our qualified instructors have backgrounds in environmental education and in the adventure activities they will be leading. Through hands-on learning and experiential education that focuses on the needs of the class, your students will quickly learn the concepts presented.
SRO's School Programs
Use these as ideas for your school or home-school program. SRO will work to help you build the best program for your students.
SRO's Get Out Initiative: Still River Outfitters, Inc.'s to give kids, grades 1 – 12, exposure to the outdoors as a lifestyle alternative. Too many kids are left out of enriching outdoor activities through circumstances beyond their control. SRO has developed this initiative to show kids that choosing the outdoor lifestyle is a positive step towards a fulfilling life. This program is designed to act as a hands-on exploratory adventure for small classroom sized audiences or school wide assemblies. The classroom version is a very personal look into an outdoors lifestyle. Whitewater kayaks and other gear are brought into the classroom where together the class will explore and touch the gear used to safely recreate outdoors. Our staff will tell personal stories backed up by photos and videos of exciting places to explore in the outdoors. The school wide assembly version is an audio-visual look into a outdoors lifestyle led by one or more of our staff members. This program is free to any educational institution that asks. We will focus on the positive aspects of the outdoors. This is not an approach to do “this and not that.” We believe the excitement that the outdoors has to offer can stand on it's own without drawing in negatives. SRO's great introduction to SRO's other school oriented programs.
Outdoor Adventure Club: This exciting program brings kids back to the outdoors under the leadership of professional outdoor educators. Students will learn while having fun and making friends. All activities are run with an emphasis on safety, cooperation and skill development while promoting trust and developing leadership qualities. This program is designed to be flexible to work with your school or department's goals and calendar. Activities may include: Snowshoeing, Kayaking (Recreational, Touring and/or Whitewater), Wilderness Survival, Adventure Education/Team-building Initiatives, Community Service, Map/Compass and Orienteering, Geo-Caching, Boat-building, Native American Games and other outdoor skills and activities
“What would you attempt if you knew you couldn't fail?” Jr. Outdoor Leadership Program: Outdoor Leadership Program:
The ultimate goal of our Youth Outdoor Leadership Programs are to develop student leaders that will have a long-lasting positive impact on the culture of your community.
These programs are truly run by the participants. Students are expected to take genuine responsibility for their decisions and actions. The adult leaders will provide training to the students and monitor their progress. Students will engage in activities where they are directly responsible for their safety and the safety of the group. Team building and group communication skills are an integral part of this program.
The outdoor activities available for this program are limited only by the students' imagination and desire to challenge themselves. Whitewater kayaking, sea kayaking, rock climbing, and backpacking are just a few that the students may choose from. All of these programs ill be wrapped around team building/adventure education activities and methodology. Students will be encouraged to push beyond their personal comfort zone and try new things. “Challenge by choice” will always be upheld and “peer pressure” will not be tolerated. Our students are expected to foster a positive and supportive environment. Outdoor activities are often very equipment intensive. SRO uses the best equipment available in all of our programs.
SRO will provide the necessary equipment for the activities with students only needing to provide clothing and a few personal items.

Field and Class Trips: We are often asked to help schools and classes get their kids out in the woods or on the water as part of their regular class curriculum. We are happy to assist your team in any way possible. Learning about pond ecology from a canoe seat, or seeing how are rivers impacted by development and factory locations while floating a river often has a greater impact on students understanding.
