Medical Classes
Wilderness First Aid: This program is sponsored by Still River Outfitters, Inc and taught by SOLO Schools of Conway NH. Accidents can and do happen in the outdoors. Wilderness First Aid (WFA) prepares students to deal with emergency situations when more advanced medical assistance is not immediately available. This course is 16 hours of hands on scenarios and class room discussion.

Wilderness First Responder: The Wilderness First Responder program is the perfect course for anyone working in a position of leadership in an outdoor setting or for individuals who want a high level of wilderness medical training for extended backcountry trips or expeditions.

Introduction to Canoe/Kayak with Operation Paddle Safe: Many youth groups and their governing bodies require training in canoeing and/or kayaking before the volunteer leaders can bring their groups on trips and rent boats. SROs Introduction to Canoe and Kayak programs are taught in accordance with the American Canoe Association's criteria by certified instructors. In addition we discuss, stress and practice leadership rolls, rescues, and group dynamics. The course ends with the American Canoe Association's Operation Paddle Safe exam and certification. All ACA fees and a one-year membership are included in this program.

The ACA sets the standard for those wishing to teach others to canoe and kayak. The ACA certifies instructors in many disciplines related to paddling. These courses are invaluable beyond the certification as an instructor. There is much to learn from your fellow students as well. Level 3 Coastal Kayak IDW/ICE: A Level 3 Coastal Instructor certification are for those who wish to teach other to paddle safely and efficiently in kayaks designed for the sea with bulkheads or flotation.

The focus of leadership, SRO- style, is on leading small groups in the wilderness, but the lessons transfer to your life when you participate in groups at school, in sports and at work.
Our Outdoor Leadership Training Program is an intensive 5-day hands-on workshop to help you attain the practical skills to be an outdoor leader. You will work together with other students to learn about paddling, backpacking, Adventure Education principles, medical emergencies, and mostly what it means to be a outdoor leader. One night will be spent in the backcountry.

Leave-No-Trace Awareness for Leaders: This full day work shop will be an extensive introduction into Leave No Trace for youth leaders. Taking the shorter workshop and expanding on it to include more in-depth on Leave No Trace beginnings, more extensive information on the seven Leave No Trace Principles, introduction to teaching Leave No Trace, and how to get more involved in the Leave No Trace network. The workshop will include a lecture portion, hands on demonstration of each principle, games and activities, and a closing ceremony.

Leave-no-Trace Trainer Course: This is a three day, two night course in Leave No Trace leading the title of Leave No Trace Trainers. The course will allow participants to learn and practice the seven principles of Leave No Trace in an outdoor setting. The course will take place at Still River Outfitters Brownsville Vermont location utilizing the outdoor classroom and the beautiful Mount. Ascutney. Day one will be an introductory into the Leave No Trace program and a night at base camp. Day’s two and three will be spent backpacking on Mount Ascutney and an overnight on the mountain. During the trip and while in the field each participants will give a presentation to the class in order to demonstrate their new knowledge. The course will end with evaluations and a “what’s next” discussion. Each participant who successful completes the course will be recognized as a Leave No Trace trainer with the Leave No Trace center for outdoor ethics. Each participant will receive a Trainer Starter Kit.
