Jr. Outdoor Leadership Program
This program is perfect for schools or recreation departments looking for a unique program for middle school age children
The Jr. Outdoor Leadership Program is designed to give middle school age children the opportunity to develop leadership skills through outdoor learning. This program will introduce students to our natural world through outdoor activities while emphasizing the development of a positive attitude and teamwork to overcome challenging situations. The ultimate goal of this program is to develop student leaders that will have a long-lasting positive impact on the community’s culture.
The focus of this program is to “learn by doing.” SRO’s staff will teach outdoor skills while coaching students through the planning and execution of outdoor trips. This program is truly run by the participants. Students are expected to take genuine responsibility for their decisions and actions. The adult leaders will provide training to the students and monitor their progress. Students will engage in activities where they are directly responsible for their safety and the safety of the group. Team building and group communication skills are an integral part of this program.
The outdoor activities available for this program are limited only by the students imagination and desire to challenge themselves. Whitewater kayaking, sea kayaking, rock climbing, and backpacking, are just a few that the students may choose from. All of these programs will be wrapped around team building/adventure education activities and methodology. Students will be encouraged to push beyond their personal comfort zone and try new things. “Challenge by choice” will always be upheld and “peer pressure” will not be tolerated. Our students are expected to foster a positive and supportive environment.
Outdoor activities are often very equipment intensive. SRO uses the best equipment available in all of our programs. SRO will provide most of the necessary equipment for all the activities with students only needing to provide clothing and a few personal items.
Day Youth Programs
Our day youth outdoor programs teach individuals outdoor skills in a non-competitive team environment. The outcome of these unique programs is students with a greater appreciation of what they can accomplish with a supportive environment. Each student will leave the program with a solid understanding and ability of the skills required for the safe enjoyment of paddling a kayak
